Description |
A synthetically produced quartz crystal, developed by Motorola laboratories for use in telecommunications equipment. These fascinating examples of man made quartz demonstrate the incredible clarity and perfection in crystal form that quartz can achieve when produced in a controlled environment. The indispensable role of quartz in oscillators, filters and other components for a broad range of devices including clocks, telecommunications equipment and computers, made it necessary for scientists to devise a method to create highly pure specimens of this common crystal type artificially. The commercial value of quartz is largely related to its piezoelectric qualities. In 1918, quartz was found to vibrate at precisely 32,768 cycles per second when conducting electricity. This discovery became the basis for many critical technologies to follow. This particular crystal comes from one of the historic factories where this process was perfected by engineers - the Motorola plant in Carlisle Pennsylvania (Formerly known as Galvin Manufacturing Corporation). Motorola engineers built upon a process which was first invented at AT&T/Bell Labs in New Jersey. To create these incredible specimens requires the use of a specialized autoclave, that heats and compresses powdered quartz "lascas" in solution to incredible temperatures of approximately 400 degrees C (742 F), at pressures of 30,000 lbs per sq. inch. The ability to create such highly pure quartz has become a critical process that has enabled the development of countless staples of modern technology. |
