Description |
This specimen is part of an old, disorganized German collection acquired in 2023. It has been tentatively identified as a specimen of Eclogite from Norway, which is a very special type of rock that is associated with subducting plate boundaries. Eclogite is formed when basaltic rock undergoes metamorphic processes at depths of 45-100km underground. This rock type is particularly dense, which contributes to the phenomenon of slab pull, when heavy subducting oceanic crust is pulled toward the subduction zone and down, contributing to the movement of oceanic plates, away from the mid oceanic rift. This piece shows the distinctive red and green color of eclogite, with tiny red garnets embedded into a matrix of the green pyroxene variety, omphacite. The garnet in this specimen is well crystallized in some areas. This piece includes a very old hand-written label. The label seems to contain an additional locality detail, but we have not been able to decipher it. |
