Description |
This specimen is a fine reference sample of the material recovered from underground sulphur deposits that are present in the caprock of a large salt dome in Louisiana. The presence of this mineral was discovered in the late 1860's in Calcasieu Parish. At the time of its discovery there was no economic way to recover the material, but by the end of the 19th century, a new method of recovery was devised which used superheated water injected into the earth, which would melt the sulphur and force it to the surface through adjacent pipes. This technique produced significant quantities of the mineral in Louisiana and in other salt domes along the gulf coast. |
