Description |
This is an example of well formed euhedral calcite from the Nanisivik Mine in the far north tundra of Canada on Baffin Island in the province of Nunavut. This lead-zinc mine was one of the most northerly mines in the world, which produced material from 1976 until 2002 when the mine closed due to declining resources and falling prices of these ore commodities. Less common were gem quality specimens such as this. The mine has undergone some reclamation work since its closure, but has been the subject of ongoing academic studies, as scholars have raised concerns about the mine as an example of western colonialism that "employed" Inuit workers following the forced Inuit resettlement from traditional hunting and fishing grounds. This area has also been a cause of concern for these indigenous people due to the potential long term soil pollution from the mine activities, which continue to be studied.
